Brew a Minecraft Night Vision potion without getting lost
8 October 2026
Turn one golden carrot into three Night Vision potions with this simple brewing guide for Minecraft Java and Bedrock Edition.
Ever explored a huge cave, placed your last torch, and then realised the tunnel keeps going? A Night Vision potion fixes that problem in seconds. Drink one and dark places become bright enough to explore, even though it is still night or pitch black underground.
The recipe works in both Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. The buttons and menus may look a little different, but the ingredients and brewing order are the same.
What you need
Gather a brewing stand, one blaze powder, one nether wart, one golden carrot, three glass bottles, and some water.
A brewing stand is the block that mixes potions. Blaze powder is its fuel. You can craft blaze powder from a blaze rod, which blazes drop in the Nether. Nether wart also grows in the Nether, often around Nether fortresses. If you are new to that dimension, take good armour, food, blocks, and a grown up helper if you need one.
Make a golden carrot by placing eight gold nuggets around a carrot in a crafting grid. One carrot can brew three potions at once, so filling every bottle slot saves ingredients.
Brew it in five steps
Fill three glass bottles with water and place them in the three bottom slots of the brewing stand.
Put blaze powder in the fuel slot on the left. One powder provides several brewing charges, so it will not vanish after this potion batch.
Place nether wart in the top ingredient slot. Wait for the bubbles and progress bar to finish. Your water bottles will become Awkward Potions. The name sounds useless, but this is the base for most useful potions.
Leave the Awkward Potions where they are. Put the golden carrot in the top slot and wait again.
Take out your three Potions of Night Vision. Drink one by holding the use button. Suddenly caves, oceans, and nighttime builds are much easier to see.
Make the effect last longer
A normal Night Vision potion lasts three minutes. To stretch it to eight minutes, put the finished potions back in the bottom slots and brew them with redstone dust.
Do not use glowstone dust for this one. Night Vision has no stronger second level, so redstone is the useful upgrade.
One warning: bright vision does not remove danger. Hostile mobs can still appear in dark areas, and the potion can make it harder to notice which spots need torches. Keep placing lights if you want a cave or base to stay safer after the effect ends.
That first sip is especially fun underwater. Instead of staring into murky blue, you can spot ruins, coral, and the sea floor much more clearly. Pack a Water Breathing potion as well if you plan to stay down there, because seeing underwater does not give you extra air.
