Make a Minecraft campfire smoke signal you can spot from far away

2 November 2026

One hidden hay bale turns an ordinary Minecraft campfire into a tall smoke signal for marking your base in Java and Bedrock Edition.

A tiny campfire is easy to miss when you are exploring. Hide one hay bale underneath it, though, and the smoke climbs much higher. It is a brilliant little Minecraft trick for marking a base, village or meeting place without building a giant tower.

What you need

Collect one campfire and one hay bale. A hay bale is crafted from nine pieces of wheat. You will also need a safe outdoor spot with a clear space above it.

This works in both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. The basic build is the same in each edition.

Build the signal

  1. Choose the spot. Pick somewhere visible, such as a hill beside your base. Keep the fire away from animals and anything you do not want players to step on, because a lit campfire causes damage.

  2. Place the hay bale. Put it on the ground where you want the smoke signal.

  3. Add the campfire. Place the campfire directly on top of the hay bale. The bale changes it into a signal fire. Ordinary campfire smoke rises about 10 blocks, while signal smoke reaches roughly 24 blocks above the fire.

  4. Check the sky. Smoke can partly squeeze through one solid block directly above the campfire, which is useful for a cabin chimney. More blocks above it will stop the plume. Even a trapdoor can block the smoke completely, so leave the path open if you want maximum height.

  5. Make it easy to recognise. Build a small stone ring around the hay bale or use coloured blocks nearby. Do not cover the campfire itself. Your friends can agree that one signal means home and two signals mean the meeting area.

Put it out safely

Use a shovel on the campfire to extinguish it when you do not need the smoke. A splash water bottle also works. You can relight a dry campfire with flint and steel.

Water behaviour has a small edition difference. In Bedrock Edition, water flowing through the space above can put the campfire out. In either edition, waterlogging the campfire extinguishes it. Waterlogging means placing water inside the same block space.

That hidden hay bale is the whole trick. Try the build without one first, then add it and watch the smoke stretch upwards. It is simple, useful and much easier to spot when an adventure has taken you a bit too far from home.
