Does Luigi's Mansion 3 support local co-op?

9 October 2026

Set up Luigi's Mansion 3 story co-op with Gooigi, understand when it unlocks, and separate couch play from ScareScraper multiplayer.

Yes. Luigi’s Mansion 3 has two-player local story co-op: one person controls Luigi and the other controls Gooigi on the same console. It unlocks after Professor E. Gadd gives you Gooigi. Nintendo’s multiplayer setup guide estimates roughly an hour of story progress, so it is not available at the very start.

How to start story co-op

  1. Play the opening story until you obtain Gooigi.
  2. Press + to open the menu and choose Co-op, then select Co-op again.
  3. Register a controller for each player using the prompts on screen.
  4. Return to the game and have player two press a button to appear as Gooigi.

A single Joy-Con per person is supported. Nintendo also gives setup instructions for paired Joy-Con and Pro Controllers. The local story mode does not require a Nintendo Switch Online membership; Nintendo specifies membership for online features.

Plan around the opening section

If two children are expecting to join immediately, the unlock requirement is worth explaining before starting. One can play the opening while the other looks for clues, or you can finish that section before a planned family co-op session. Avoid promising that a precise number of minutes will unlock it: progress depends on the player.

Once both characters are available, agree who will explore and who will check suspicious corners. If your child is uneasy about the haunted setting, watch the opening together before deciding whether to continue. Co-op provides company, but does not remove the ghosts.

Story mode is different from the other multiplayer modes

ScareScraper supports up to eight people over local wireless or online, with up to two players per console. ScreamPark supports up to eight people on one console. Those player counts do not apply to the hotel story, which remains a two-player co-op adventure. Nintendo lists the mode differences in the same support guide above.
