How to Make a Fire Resistance Potion in Minecraft

9 October 2026

Brew an Awkward Potion with magma cream to make Fire Resistance. Start with water bottles and nether wart, then add magma cream. The drinkable potion lasts three minutes in Java and Bedrock; adding redstone dust makes it last eight minutes.

Ingredients

  • A brewing stand, water, one to three glass bottles, one nether wart, and blaze powder for fuel.
  • One magma cream.
  • Optional redstone dust or gunpowder.

Magma cream can drop from magma cubes, or you can craft it from a slimeball and blaze powder. Keep separate blaze powder for the brewing stand: powder used to craft the cream does not also fuel your brewing.

Step-by-step brewing

  1. Place up to three water bottles in the bottom slots of a brewing stand.
  2. Add blaze powder to the left fuel slot.
  3. Brew nether wart in the top slot to turn the bottles into Awkward Potions.
  4. Replace the ingredient with magma cream and wait for Potion of Fire Resistance.
  5. Add redstone dust if you want the eight-minute version. Keep the finished potion on your hotbar before entering the Nether.

Fire Resistance has no level II version; glowstone dust cannot make it stronger. To share the effect, add gunpowder to make a splash potion. These times describe drinkable potions: splash duration depends on edition and distance from the impact. Drink a regular potion when you need the predictable full duration.

Java and Bedrock notes

The drinkable recipe and duration match across both editions. Fire Resistance protects against fire and lava damage, including blaze fireballs. It does not stop ordinary melee attacks, explosions, falling, or drowning. A blaze can still hurt you with a close-range attack.

Common mistakes and a Nether checklist

Do not confuse a magma block with magma cream: the item is the brewing ingredient. Adding cream before nether wart will not produce the intended potion.

Drink before a risky crossing when possible. If you are already burning, using a drinkable potion takes time; do not assume merely holding it protects you. Check the timer before travelling farther, and make a solid escape route out of lava. Immunity to lava damage does not teleport you back to land.

The eight-minute version is a useful choice for a fortress trip because it leaves more time to navigate. Pack blocks, food and a spare potion separately; Fire Resistance cannot cover every kind of damage. For close-range combat, consider Strength as a separate effect.
