What Does Potent Sulfur Do in Minecraft?

Potent Sulfur makes bubbles and nausea-causing gas when placed under one to four water source blocks. Put magma directly below it and the water column becomes a geyser. Java 26.2 also documents lava as a continuous-geyser alternative.

The three main uses

1. Bubbling, noxious water

With no heat block underneath, Potent Sulfur sends bubbles through up to four water source blocks. At the surface it creates a gas cloud that gives Nausea to players and mobs. Java 26.2 says the cloud can spread across adjacent water to a maximum radius of three blocks.

That makes a convincing volcanic pool, but place fences or warning blocks around it in a family world. Nausea can be unpleasant for players who are sensitive to screen movement.

2. Magma geyser

Place a magma block underneath Potent Sulfur, with one to four source blocks of water above. The geyser erupts at random intervals and pushes entities upwards.

3. Lava geyser

Java 26.2 confirms that lava underneath creates a continuous geyser with slightly muted sounds. Bedrock 26.30’s final changelog does not document this lava variation. Contain the lava before inviting anyone to test it.

How to get Potent Sulfur

It generates naturally in water pools inside sulfur caves and in surface sulfur springs. You can also craft one Potent Sulfur block from nine regular sulfur blocks. That recipe makes it practical to build a controlled geyser near your base without dismantling every natural spring you find.

Potent Sulfur is not normal sulfur

Regular sulfur belongs to a decorative building set. Potent Sulfur is the active block responsible for bubbles, gas and geysers. If your pool does nothing, check that you did not accidentally place an ordinary sulfur block.
