TNT and Sulfur Cube Interactions Explained

8 October 2026

Give a TNT block to a Sulfur Cube and it absorbs the TNT while remaining movable. The TNT can then be primed by redstone, a fire source or a nearby explosion. Once primed, it cannot be sheared out or put safely into a bucket.

How to load and ignite it

  1. Move the cube to a clear outdoor test area.
  2. Interact with it while holding a TNT block, or let it collect the dropped TNT item.
  3. Back away before using redstone, fire, a dispenser with flint and steel, or another explosion to ignite it.
  4. Do not approach again expecting to cancel the fuse.

Java 26.2 gives the precise fuse rules: fire or redstone starts a six-second fuse. A nearby explosion gives the absorbed TNT a random fuse between 0.75 and 3 seconds. That shorter, unpredictable window makes chain reactions much more dangerous.

What happens to the Sulfur Cube?

The TNT-loaded cube keeps moving, so it is not a precise replacement for a stationary TNT block. When it explodes, it does not split into smaller Sulfur Cubes. Normally, killing a Sulfur Cube creates two smaller cubes, but the explosive outcome is different.

Before ignition, shears can remove an absorbed block. After ignition, the primed TNT cannot be sheared out. A primed explosive cube also cannot be collected with an empty bucket.

Safe experiment setup

Use a copied world or a flat area far from builds, animals, villagers and forests. Turn off mob griefing only if that matches your family’s normal rules; do not assume it changes every explosion effect. Give younger players a viewing shelter or let them trigger the test from a protected redstone line.

A good controlled comparison is one normal TNT block beside one TNT-loaded cube, both ignited by separate levers. Observe movement, fuse timing and crater position without adding more explosives.
