How to Get Cinnabar in Minecraft

8 October 2026

To get Cinnabar, find a sulfur cave and mine the red Cinnabar blocks that generate in bands through the biome. Surface sulfur springs can include visible Cinnabar and are the best clue that a larger supply lies underground.

Finding Cinnabar step by step

  1. Search the Overworld for a bubbling sulfur spring with yellow and red blocks.
  2. Mark the spring, then dig a safe staircase beside it rather than straight through the water.
  3. Enter the sulfur cave below and look for broad red bands against the yellow sulfur.
  4. Light the area and deal with cave spiders before mining.
  5. Take extra blocks home if you plan to use stairs, slabs or walls; a large build consumes material quickly.

Cinnabar is part of the cave itself, not a mob drop. You do not need to defeat Sulfur Cubes to collect it.

What can you make with Cinnabar?

Chaos Cubed adds a full Cinnabar stone-style building family. Mojang’s final Java notes confirm:

  • regular Cinnabar;
  • polished Cinnabar;
  • Cinnabar bricks;
  • slabs, stairs and walls for each variant;
  • chiseled Cinnabar.

The deep red colour pairs strongly with yellow sulfur, dark deepslate, copper and pale woods. For a beginner family project, try a red-roofed cave outpost with yellow sulfur path markers leading back to the surface.

Mining advice

Bring a pickaxe and spare one in case your main tool breaks. The final official notes confirm where Cinnabar generates and which blocks exist, but do not provide a simple player-facing promise about every tool tier in both editions. If a block is breaking unusually slowly or drops nothing, stop and switch to a better pickaxe rather than risking the rest of the vein.

While gathering blocks, watch for falling sulfur spike stalactites and nearby pools. Standing on upward-pointing sulfur spikes is harmless, but falling spikes can cause damage.
