How to Find Sulfur Caves in Minecraft

The easiest way to find a sulfur cave is to look for a sulfur spring on the Overworld surface, then explore beneath it. Mojang’s Bedrock 26.30 notes say springs generate above sulfur caves, making their yellow sulfur, red Cinnabar and bubbling, nausea-causing gas your clearest surface clue.

What to look for

A sulfur spring is not ordinary water. Look for:

• yellow sulfur and noxious gas; Bedrock 26.30 also describes visible red Cinnabar around the pool;
• bubbles and pale puffs of gas;
• Potent Sulfur; Java 26.2 lists magma blocks as part of the spring feature;
• a pool that gives nearby players or mobs the Nausea effect.

Once you find one, mark the location before going underground. A tall pillar placed a safe distance away, a map marker or saved coordinates will make the return trip much easier.

How to reach the cave safely

Do not dig straight down through the middle of the spring. Sulfur caves contain shallow pools, cave spiders and other hostile mobs, and falling sulfur spikes can hurt.

Instead:

1. Move to dry ground beside the spring.
2. Dig a staircase down, adding torches as you go.
3. Listen for cave sounds and water.
4. Open a small viewing gap before stepping into a large chamber.
5. Bring a shield, food, blocks, torches and an empty bucket.

When the stone gives way to broad bands of bright yellow sulfur and deep red Cinnabar, you have reached the right biome. Glow lichen, sulfur pools and Sulfur Cubes are extra confirmation.

If you cannot find one

Travel into unexplored terrain if your world was created before Chaos Cubed. New world-generation features normally appear in chunks generated after an update, so an old, heavily explored area may have no new springs nearby. There is no official promise that every spring will be easy to spot, so search open ground methodically rather than wandering underground at random.
