How Do Minecraft Geysers Work?

A Chaos Cubed geyser uses a magma block at the bottom, Potent Sulfur directly above it, and one to four water source blocks above that. Magma creates eruptions at random intervals in both final changelogs. Java 26.2 additionally documents lava as a replacement that makes the eruption continuous, with slightly quieter sounds.

Build order

From bottom to top, place:

a magma block for intermittent bursts; in Java 26.2, a lava block can instead make a continuous geyser;
one Potent Sulfur block;
one to four water source blocks in a vertical column.

Keep the water source count within that range. Ordinary flowing water or a taller column is not the confirmed recipe from the release notes.

What the geyser does

A magma-powered geyser waits, then shoots a plume of water particles upwards and pushes entities above it into the air. Natural geysers can appear at the surface above sulfur caves. The start and end of each eruption also produce game events that a Sculk Sensor can detect, opening up redstone possibilities.

A lava-powered geyser is specifically documented as continuous in Java 26.2; Bedrock 26.30’s final changelog only describes the magma recipe. Put barriers around the lava while building so nobody falls into it before the water column is ready.

Safe uses for beginners

Build a launch tower over a deep pool and test with an empty inventory.
Move mobs vertically without a conventional bubble elevator.
Connect a Sculk Sensor to lights that flash when a magma geyser erupts.
Add railings around a decorative spring so visitors do not step onto it by accident.

Test your landing area before turning a geyser into transport. The official notes confirm the upward impulse but do not promise a fixed launch height in every situation.
